Screw Conveyors
When it comes to moving bulk solids in a reliable, enclosed manner, Screw Conveyors (also known as auger conveyors) are a time-tested solution. Modern Industrial Automation Solutions Pvt. Ltd. offers custom-designed screw conveyor systems for transporting powders, granules, and even semi-solid materials horizontally, vertically (as screw elevators), or at inclines.
A screw conveyor consists of a rotating helical screw blade (flighting) within a U-shaped or tubular trough. As it turns, it pushes material along the trough. This simple principle makes screw conveyors one of the most versatile and widely used types of conveyors in industrial operations. You’ll find them handling grain in a farm silo, feeding powder to a packaging machine, removing chips in a machining center, or conveying cement in a concrete plant.

Product Variants & Specifications
Product Variants & Specifications
Tubular Screw Conveyors
These have a fully enclosed tubular casing with the screw inside. They’re great for inclined or vertical applications, or when spillage and dust must be strictly contained.
Specifications
- Diameters: From small (100mm) to large (500mm+) as needed.
- Lengths: Can range from a couple of meters to 30m or more with intermediate hanger bearings for support.
- Capacities: Vary by size and speed – e.g., a 250mm dia. screw might convey ~20-30 tons/hour of grain at moderate RPM, whereas a 400mm could do 100+ tons/hour of a lighter material.
- Orientation: Can be oriented at any angle (though capacity decreases with steep angles).
- Vertical Screws (Screw Elevators): Typically use specialized steep-pitch flights and high speeds to throw material up – these have lower capacity and are shorter (maybe up to 8-10m vertical effectively).
- Containment: Tubular design keeps material completely enclosed (good for dusty or hazardous materials, or for outdoor installation to protect material).
Trough Screw Conveyors
These feature a U-shaped trough with a removable cover. They are common for horizontal use where periodic inspection or cleaning might be necessary.
Specifications
- Trough Sizes: Standard trough sizes match common screw diameters (6″, 9″, 12″, 16″, etc.).
- Feeding: Easier to feed from multiple points (you can have multiple inlets along the top cover).
- Support: Often have intermediate hanger bearings every 2-3 meters for screw support if long.
Materials & Construction
We tailor materials: mild steel for general use, stainless steel for food, pharma, or corrosive chemicals; hardened steel or wear coatings for abrasive service (like glass cullet, sand). Screw flights can be continuous welded or sectional.
Specifications
- Standard full-pitch flight: (pitch ~ equal to diameter) is most common for horizontal.
- Half-pitch: For inclined or for more gentle, controlled conveyance.
- Ribbon flights: Open helix, typically when a center pipe is needed but less surface; can help mixing or for sticky stuff to reduce buildup.
- Cut-and-folded flights or paddle attachments: If mixing or agitating is needed (some screws double as mixers or conditioners).
Industry Applications of Screw Conveyors
Industry Applications of Screw Conveyors
Agriculture & Food
Used for conveying grains, flour, animal feed, sugar, and spices. Common in feed mills, breweries, and food processing for controlled feeding and gentle handling.
Chemicals & Plastics
Ideal for moving plastic pellets, resin, and powders like detergent or fertilizer. Also used to feed extruders and transfer material between bins and packaging.
Mining & Minerals:
Convey coal, ore, cement, fly ash, limestone, and kiln dust. Common in batching plants, cement works, and mineral processing facilities.
Wastewater & Environmental
Shaftless screw conveyors efficiently handle sticky sludge, screenings, and grit in treatment plants without clogging.
Wood & Biomass
Move wood chips, sawdust, and biomass to boilers, pellet presses, and digesters. Shaftless designs help with fibrous material
Construction & Manufacturing
Used to transport materials like plaster powder, sand, soda ash, lime, and metal chips. Key in steel, glass, and gypsum board production.
Pharmaceuticals
Feeders dose powders into mixers or presses with high sanitary standards. Provide enclosed, contamination-free transfer between process stages.
